JESUS, TEBOW, AND SNL
( A lesson from the unregenerate )
By now you have most probably at least heard or even have had the misfortune of watching Saturday Night Live and the Tim Tebow skit that was aired back on December 17 of this year. If you have not seen it I have attached the video above from YouTube for you viewing torment. Make sure you have a bucket and some stomach acid medicine, you will need it. All I have to say is WOW and that is not is a good way. So where to start on reviewing this video? Well the best place in a case like this is to usually start at the beginning. However, in this case there really is not much to say about the video in general but more to say about the message behind it.
As we all know or at least have figured out by now SNL soul existence is to poke fun at various topics and people. While SNL over the years has come close to crossing the line of crudeness and tastelessness many times in the past, this time they have secured a solid position over that line. With the airing of the “Tebow Skit” on December 17th they did more than just poke fun at a celebrity or topic. What the actors in this skit achieved was an outright blatant and demeaning attack, one of much ferocity, aimed towards not just towards a one person but an entire group of people. The group of people that I am referencing is us, the Christians in society. I would dare to venture that SNL and it’s producers would not have tried such disparage on other religious groups within our society. Could you imagine the uproar if SNL would have done such a skit about a Muslim honoring his faith. The Muslim society would be in an uproar demanding an apology for such a put down of their faith. So the question I ask of all my brothers and sisters in Christ is why do we allow our faith to be trampled upon? If a false religion with a false god is willing to stand up and voice what they believe when they are wronged. Then us as Christians who have the truth should even be more vigilant in our pursuit of defending our faith when it is mischaracterized or demoralized. Especially when it comes to the Son of our God and our Savior Jesus Christ.
Sadly the Tewbo skit represents what a lot of the world thinks about Christianity and Jesus in general. We really are just seeing in the SNL skit what the carnal world thinks about religion and faith. What more can you expect from a fallen world? They are acting in accordance to their unregenerate state. This out right mischaracterization of Christianity can be much expected by people in such a fallen state.
There is a deeper sentiment going on here with in this skit towards Christianity. That sentiment is much to our fault as the church. For years now the American church as poorly misrepresented its self and who Christ is. The underling view of who Christ is that SNL is presenting is a product of who the church as portrayed on a large part of who Christ is to the public. This can be seen in the characterization within the skit when Jesus is seen sitting with the football players and chumming it up just as if he was their “buddy”. This misrepresentation of Jesus sadly is characteristically presented to be who Jesus is by many churches in Christendom today. Many churches today represent Jesus as being some type of cosmic genie or your best friend instead correctly representing the attributes of Jesus as our Savior and His Holiness. While we as Christians and the true believers and followers of Christ should not allow this type of outright libel remarks to be made about our Savior we must also point the finger of blame on leaders within the Christian church.
We should also note within this skit the abstruse memorandum that is being quietly pushed along in quiet under tones. What is being subverted and subliminally pushed is the marginalization of Christianity as a valid belief system. This is seen when the actor playing Tebow is very enthusiastically talking to "jesus' and he is told in all plainness to take a chill pill and not get so enthusiastic about Christ. This push has been going on for decades secretly and more openly in the recent years with in the general media, television shows, and movies. Since much of the media outlets are ran by liberal organization and liberal minded people that cannot stand true Christianity and what it represents, it would only make sense for them to try and silence or misrepresent Christianity. If they can successfully misrepresentation Christianity by marginalizing it and making it a joke through such portrayals as seen in Saturday Night Live’s skit they have in effect silenced the ability for true Christians to accurately be portrayed within media circles and to be taken seriously.
So than what are Christians suppose to do? I am not a big fan of advocating boycotting because in the long run this does nothing but cause more problems and heart aches for those doing the boycotting. What I do advocate is that as Christians we start to teach the truth about who Jesus is. That we start to hold our churches and Pastors accountable to make sure that they are representing the Christ of the bible not blue-eyed blond haired surfer jesus. That in the public arena we stand tall and correctly represent who Christ is according to the bible. I also would advocate that we as Christians let NBC and SNL know what we think of there slanderous and gross misrepresentation of our Faith. We have a voice as believers and it is about time that we should start using it. To often we as Christians do not speak up and defend the faith on an individual level instead we leave it to others to do. On issues like these every Christian should have a voice and use it to make known their feelings on such topics.
