THE MIGHTY I AM
The religious movement know as “The Mighty I am” was started by Guy Ballard or better know by his pen name, Godfre Ray King. This movement is like so many of the smaller cult movements in that they by definition deny the deity of Christ teaching that Jesus was an ascended master not the Son of God. They deny other Christian doctrines like teaching that the Trinity is a Christian myth and that the Holy Spirit is your I am presence. They out right reject Christianity and the belief that Jesus Christ is not Lord and Savior. “The Christ [not Jesus] is in reality the MASTER WITHIN!” (The voice of the I AM, December, 1936 p.37) They also teach that salvation is gained by a lifetime of good works and occult practices and that heaven and hell are states of consciousness.
This is an New Age cult that has described its purpose as to bring “ ascended I AM power” to America. That America may fulfill her cosmic destiny as the world’s repository of “Light.” As you can see by the stated purpose this cult mixes New Age with humanistic and narcissistic teachings that “you” have to the “power” that “you” are able to control the out come of all that happens. They believe that man is inwardly divine. In many ways this movement compares to is the Emergent Church movement and where their teaching are headed with poor eisegesis of scripture and reading themselves into biblical teachings instead of Christ. “[Jesus States:] try to always to remember that you are human beings so-called, but you are gods and goddesses in embryo.” (Godfre Ray King, The “I AM” Discourses, p.273-274)
This movement as most cult groups claim to hold the only truth and this is by revealed teachings. They claim to be among the vanguard of movements bring light and truth to the world; to be the only way to attaining the “Ascension” or spiritual resurrection. It is taught within this group that the Second Coming happened when Jesus appeared to the Ballards as an ascended master. This movement is heavily into occult practices. They believe in Spiritism, voluntary possessions, magic, and retributive magic.
As with all small occultic groups their purpose is a self servering one focused on man or a leader and the ability to serve that leader or organization.
