Once again Oprah Winfrey is making news. This time she is claiming to be a "Christian" and to know "Jesus." Really, haven't we heard this before? The question that needs to be asked is; What "jesus" does Oprah really know? Is it the one of the bible or the one of her own choosing? To answer this question lets take a look at the video in which she defines what her "Christianity" is all about. We could venture to say this could be considered her testimony. So lets begin and see if her testimony of Christianity matches biblical Christianity.
In the first 30 seconds of this video we have several problems. First Oprah is talking about us "tapping into our Spiritual side" and she "is not talking about religion." A person will look long and hard to find those two concepts in the bible. What does she mean by "tapping into our spiritual side?"
At about the 33 second mark a real disturbing statement is made by Oprah that in itself makes very clear she is not following the Jesus of the bible. Oprah says;
" I not ask you to be Christian you, if you want to be one I can show you how, but it's not required ... I have respect for all faiths..... all faiths."
By Oprah's own words she openly admits that being a Christian is not "required." So than what is required? In other words, Christ is not required for salvation according to Oprah, sense that is the whole part that makes being a "Christian" a Christian, than how can she say she's a Christian? This is troubling to say the very least and stands in direct contradiction to the Word of God that states in John 14:6 " I am The Way, The Truth and The Life, No man will see the Father unless by Me." This type of double speak should not be surprising from Oprah and it falls right inline with her New Age teachings and beliefs of the past.
In the same breath Oprah speaks about having respect for "ALL faiths and I mean ALL faiths." What does she really mean here? This is nothing more than New Age double speak. The meaning behind her statement can really be read as saying that she doesn't believe that any one religion is necessarily wrong, that every religion is right in its own sense. This type of double speak falls right in line with her New Age view that their are many paths to God, which she has stated on many of her previous shows and videos.
This New Age concept of Pantheism violates one of the basic laws of logic, the second law of logic to be precise the law of non-contradiction. Her New Age philosophy violates this law on the tenants that not all religions can lead to God because different religions teach contrary beliefs about God thus contradicting themselves by their own very teachings when compared to one another.
Note how Oprah from about 53 seconds to 1:19 states she is not talking about "religion or faith" she is talking about "spirituality." The problem is not so much this first part of her statement but how she defines "spirituality." Oprah defines her "spirituality" as; " living her life with having an open heart." As a supposed "christian" where is Oprah getting this definition from? I am sure she is not getting it from the bible, one will look long and hard for this meaning there and you won't find it. She has more likely gotten her definition from Eckhart Tolle or Deepak Chopra because of the New Age terminology and lack of any biblical referencing in her definition. Instead she tells us to allow ourselves to "a line with such values as tolerance, acceptance, harmony, cooperation and reverence for life." The terms that sheis using for her definitions are strait out of the New Age hand book from the section on happy ecumenical living. What she is trying to do here is blur the line between two religions; Christianity and New Age mysticism. Oprah is doing this with a play on words and switch of hands methods. While these concepts that she has mentioned in her definition can be found in a conceptional form to some extent within Christianity Oprah is taking these concepts and apply New Age meaning to them. Much as the Mormon's have done by redefining who Jesus.
If Oprah's New Age wording and terminology is not convincing enough for you listen to what she states at approximately the 1:20-1:30 mark. Oprah believes the following; " There is a force energy consciousness divine thread that connects all of us spiritually together with something that is greater than us." Really Oprah you don't say? This right here is not a biblical teaching of Christianity at all. This is something totally different and it's not good, it's demonic. The bible does not teach that their is a "force energy consciousness." If Oprah was a true biblical Christian she would not be defining God in this manner. This is again straight out of the Eckhart Tolle play book of New Age mysticism.
Oprah at about the 1:44 mark talk's about living in the "space of an open heart" and if you are living in that space "you will have a blessed life." What is she talking about here. So if I open my heart I can get my best life now? Mixing Joel Osteen's Word of Faith teachings with her New Age mysticism.
Listen very carefully at the phraseology that Oprah uses at about the 2:00 mark. She talks about us all being "spiritual beings having a human experience." In New Age mysticism the experience trumps everything. It doesn't matter about what is known or what logic dictates it's all about the experience. Some Christian cult groups like the NAR (New Apologetic Reformation) teach this as well.
At the 2:30 mark Oprah tells us how she became so successful. At this point I think it is important to note and listen to how everything is about I, my, What I did, etc there is not Christ mentioned here. Instead she talks about, "living in the moment of Spirit." Again this is New Age wording that attempts to blur the line between New Age and Christianity. The bible never teaches that it is because of what we do we secede. Instead it's because of what Christ has done on the Cross and Him living in us that anything we do is good, it's not what we have done.
Listen at the 2:36 mark at how she again claims her Christianity, "because she is Christian," by trying to say here favorite bible verse, but can't seem to remember it. Oprah is actually mocking the word of God by what she is doing here. She is marginizing the Word of God by poking fun at the fact she can't remember the verse out of Acts 17:28 . Let's look at what Acts 17:28 really says and compare it to what she says it states.
‘In him we live and move and have our being’;as even some of your own poets have said,“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ ESV.
Now what does Oprah say it means;
"In God I live and move and have my being."
Talk about taking a paraphrase of this verse and taking it out of context. This verse is dealing with in the context of what we can do with Christ, because of Christ and the Holy Spirit living within us. It is not implying what Oprah is taking it's meaning to be, which is what I, Me, Myself can do because of Me having an open heart. Once again more New Age teachings and word switching.
At roughly the 3:30-3:50 mark Oprah talks about how when she was four her "Spirit told her that this is not going to be her life." in reference to her grandmother washing her clothes. We again she a mixing of religious elements. This time she is taking the Word of Faith, Word of Knowledge principle and trying to blur it and mix it into the New Age teachings of "Spirit." I might add she is doing it very cleverly too. A person if not a their "A" game may not even realize it.
This next area that Oprah talks about I would agree with partially, I can't believe I am saying that. This is at about the 4 minute mark where she talks about "beneath all psychical problems there is a Spiritual solution." At this point this is where we stop agreeing because the solution is not her New Age teachings but God's redemptive plan of Salvation; Christ.
Oprah continues on for the rest of the clip the last 20 or so seconds talking again about us as humans having a " human experience" and that the only solution to our problems is that we have a open heart and a correct "experience." Of course all this she is saying in the last few seconds again is all New Age mystical teachings being interwoven with Christianity.
As seen and heard by Oprah'a own words, testimony and definitions in this video she is not a true follower of Christ. Oprah's new claim of "christianity" is not the true biblical "Christianity" but instead a New Age version that is sadly sweeping through and absorbing so many people into it's demonic clutches.
