On March 16, 2012 Joel Osteen mega church pastor of Lakewood Church in Huston, TX made an appearance to just about a sell out crowd numbering nearly 12,000 persons at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. To preach his brand of "Christianity."
As one could expect the message of Osteen was anything but biblical and of course lacked any references to a biblical Gospel presentation. One thing is for sure the 12,000 people in attendance that night sure did not hear about the Christ of the bible. Instead they heard motivational pep talk and how to have "Your Best Life Now."
In the opening to the video we are greeted by guy smiley himself telling us what he wants people to get out of this event. Not shockingly it's not the message of Salvation about how Christ paid for our sins on the Cross. How His righteousness was imputed to us. How we are declared Holy and Righteous in front of God because of Christ atoning work on the Cross. Instead Osteen tells us that;
" my prayer for tonight is that people will go out being inspired and encouraged...and that they will go out knowing that there are good days ahead."
Okay really that is all great and fine Mr. Osteen but how about having your prayer be about Christ and people being called to Christ by the Father. Maybe even you might add that you pray that what you are doing can be used by God for His Glory not your own. That would be a sound prayer and a better starting point then what you said. Also Osteen do you have a bible verse for any of the things in your prayer that support your pray? Nope didn't thing so, because there is not one to support your message. Instead Osteen once again has shown us exactly where his theology is at, if we can say Osteen has any theology, aimed at lifting up man not Christ Crucified, Died, Buried, Resurrected.
For anyone who has been following Joel Osteen for any length of time and has even an ounce of biblical discernment this type of preaching is no big surprise. What amazes me in this video the most is that the actual real prayer that was biblical was cut short. The prayer as you can see and hear was not given by Joel Osteen but by some anonymous speaker in the video. What really prognosticates Joel Osteen style of preaching, if we can call it that, is that even behind stage he is unable to bestow a biblical prayer.
As we watch the rest of the video we will see at the 34 second mark we can see and hear Osteen preaching not about the gospel or any type of biblical message. Instead he is preaching about what "you" can do for "yourself". There is not even a hint anything biblical being preached at this event. I truly think that the 12,000 people in attendance got more out of the praise and worship band playing then they did hearing Joel Osteen speak.
If I was someone in attendance at this event I would be asking for a refund after hearing what Osteen said onstage. I could have turned on Dr. Phil and have gotten the same advice. What can we really expect from someone that preachers secular pop psychic teachings wrapped in a Christian feel-good wrapper.
