Who Is Jesus?
Who is Jesus? This question has a simple answer IF you are a Bible believing Christian. However, in today’s world the question “who is Jesus?”, is a more complex and difficult one to answer. Depending on your religious suppositions and beliefs, your jesus can be a total different person in comparative to the biblical Jesus of the Bible. For example; If you are a Mormon you believe that Jesus is an exalted man that became a god of this planet. If you are a Jehovah Witness then you believe that Jesus is the brother of Lucifer. If you are Muslim or believe in Eastern mystic religions you believe that Jesus was a good teacher.
For bible following Christians we believe that Jesus is the central figure of Christianity. This is who our Salvation and our eternal hope rest's on. Christ in John 14:6 stated that, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." Also, the Jesus of Christianity makes the claim to be God in flesh. If you compare what God said to Moses in Exodus 3:14 "And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM” with what Jesus said in John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am," then you quickly see that Jesus was claiming to be God.
In Biblical Christianity Jesus is the second person of the Trinity. He is the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. In John 1:1-2 ,14 we see this being taught ~"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God... And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth," As we see in the Scriptures the word was with God and was God and became flesh, we then are able to state that Jesus has two natures. Jesus is both divine and human. Therefore, we can say that Christianity teaches that Jesus is both God and man at the same time.
Because Jesus has two natures He right now, in heaven, is still in the form of a man and is also God, as taught in 1 Timoth 2:5; "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. ” In John 2:19-22 we see that Jesus rose from the dead in the same body he died in: "Jesus answered and said to them, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.' 20 The Jews therefore said, 'It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?' 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had spoken."
The Jesus of the bible is also Holy, He has never sinned or done any wrong because of His divine nature and that Christ is God in flesh. Since God cannot sin sense that would go against His Holy Righteous nature, Christ therefore cannot sin. If Christ did sin this would violate God's own nature thus invalidating the Holiness of God. This teaching in comparison to the Muslim, Mormon, Jehovah Witness, or New Age Eastern religion versions of jesus which have all sinners and only are exalted forms of men or good teachers are lacking in their ability to truly define who Christ really is.
Though there have been many great teachers throughout history, none of them have performed such miracles and claimed to be divine as Jesus claimed. This is why we can believe Him when He says in John 14:6, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me,"
There is only one Jesus that offers eternal salvation and the hope that lies within Christianity, He is the Son of God the Christ of His Father’s Holy Word. He is the Jesus Christ of the bible.
