Are We Little Gods?
Are we little gods? Today we are told by many popular Word of Faith teachers and Positive Confession teachers “we are little gods.” The teaching that believers in Christ is a "little god," is patently unscriptural. It is an incorrect interpretation of the Scriptures. If pressed about their “little gods” doctrine, Positive Confession teachers and Word of Faith teachers would probably respond by saying that they are only repeating what the Bible says. We should, therefore, turn our attention in that direction, and look at some passages that are often cited by these men.
Those who promote the false teaching that believers are "little gods" use Psalms 82:6 and John 10:34 as their main proof text a passage in Psalms.
Such an interpretation of Psalm 82:6 and John 10:34 is a prime example of taking Scripture out of context. Both of these passages include explanations in the immediate context which clearly do not imply human divinity. While sure men are called as gods. We must note that even Satan is called the god of this age. Even God Himself said that He executed judgment against the gods of Egyptians. No, believers are not "little gods" despite what the Word of Faith teachers proclaim.
Supporters of the "little gods" teaching attack Scripture and contradict what the Bible teaches. They should be reminded of what the psalmist says of those called "gods": "You shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes" (Psalm 82:7). In other words, the Bible affirms the humanity of ostensible "gods" in this world. By declaring ourselves to be "little gods," we are attempting to make ourselves equal to God Himself. Without question, this is the sheer height of arrogance and is nothing more than self-worship and self-glorification of man. As the psalmist stated, “There is nothing new under the sun.” The lie that we are "little gods" is the same lie the serpent told Eve in the Garden: "You will be like God" in Genesis 3:5. Remember how that turned out?
