The word atheism comes from a negative root which means ‘no,’ and then which means ‘god.’ Hence, atheism in the most fundamental terms means can mean ‘no god.’ Basically, atheism is a lack of belief in a god and / or the belief that there is no god. By contrast, theism is the belief that there is a God and that he is knowable and that he is involved in the world. Most atheists do not consider themselves anti-theists but simply non-theists.
I've encountered many atheists who claim that atheism is not a belief system while others say it is. Since there is no official atheist organization, nailing down which description of atheism to use can be difficult. However, in the light of recent atheist groups pushing for laws and recognition of their “ non-belief ” the many lower courts of law and state Supreme Courts have recognized Atheism as an official belief system. Hence, this would make them their own religion of “non-religion” of “non-belief.”
As it can be seen the atheist themselves have a hard time deciding whether or not they are part of a belief system or not. This makes it even harder for a Christian to know what one particular group or one atheist believes in particular. This why it is important for Christians to know what we believe it and why we believe. As Christians when we interact with atheists one of the most important things we can do is listen and ask questions. Due to the vast spectrums of variances within atheism Christians need to be able to narrow down where the atheist is coming from. We will be able to better defend our faith and ultimately point the atheist towards God and the Gospel that will convert. Listen to the full show here : http://tobtr.com/s/7160393.
