What is Secular Humanism

Secular Humanism is a philosophical system of thought that focuses on human value, thoughts, and actions. Secular Humanism shares with Atheism the notion that anything supernatural or religious should be rejected. However, within Secular Humanism is the belief that the human is the pinnacle of creation. They believe that human reason, and physical standards should be emphasized in the areas of government, art, ethics and belief systems.
This worldview of human focus requires a person to investigate all matters in the required search for truth and not simply accept faith as a viable reason of acceptance. Since the search for truth within Secular Humanism is delineated by human ethics and standards not God, Secular Humanism values for truth are flawed and never constant. In other words, truth becomes a matter of relativity to each person’s own standard of ethics and objectives. What may be right for one person may not be right for another. This objective and substandard approach to ethics and morals leave Secular Humanism void of the ability to draw any real reason for their own morality because their morality does not come from God, but instead their own standards.
When we look at the Bible, it does not directly address the topic of Secular Humanism. However, we do find in the Old Testament we find Israel’s government is clearly theocracy, where God is the King of Israel and where God’s laws are applied by the government. In the New Testament, the people of God are not marginalized from the Roman government that the idea of influencing government policy does not frequently occur in the New Testament. However, Scripture does teach that all areas of life are under the domain of God.
In today’s society, Secular Humanism is fast becoming a cultural option for many, especially those who have become frustrated with the mixing of religion into politics and public life. As followers of Christ, we have a worldview that is grounded in the fact that God has revealed himself to humanity. We believe that our future depends on Christ and the carrying out of His agenda by His people for the redemption of the world. Within our distinctively Christian worldview, we need to be exceeding watchful of allowing our lives to be partitioned into spiritual and non spiritual categories. No dimension of life is off limits for discipleship for Christians. In fact, Jesus calls us to place all of our life under His control and lordship.
