10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one ~Romans 3:10-12
Well I started out the day like I usually start out any other day, which is with the normal morning routine, I got online and checked out what was going on in the realm of Christianity. Like I normally do I check my Twitter updates and Facebook updates. While doing so, I came across this little newly added video from Joel Osteen and his ministry. At this point, you may be wondering why I am subscribed to Joel Osteen and choose to get his updates? Well, I have often asked myself that same question and no it’s not just to get my blood pressure up, it does that fine on its own. Well in the simplest reasoning and most honest answer, as an apologist, sometimes you cannot help avoiding watching a train wreck. That is what we have here in this video below a train wreck of belief, or better lack of said theology and Christ.
After watching this video, the first word that comes to my mind is WOW! The first thought that I could render after my blood pressure came down was CHRISTLESS! This video is the perfect example of what is wrong with Joel Osteen, his “church," his followers, and a lot of American “Christians.” They are CHRISTLESS! They sadly never had Christ to begin with.
Granted this is a promo video, but if this short video is supposed to be a highlight of the “Night of Hope” and its high points, well than those attending are in grave danger. They are in danger of being wooed into having a false sense of eternal security. Osteen does a very good job making people “feel” that they the” best Christian” they can be and are going to get God’s “favor” because of that. In other words Osteen is very good at turning our Sovereign Savior into a magical genie god, a feel good god. Osteen is also taking the Gospel of Christ and turning it from a gift to an act of work. One must “do” something in order to obtain God’s “favor.” In this case, one must gain God’s favor by declaring things in one’s life (A typical Word of Faith heresy). There is nothing anyone can do to obtain God’s favor, we know from Scripture that none, not one is Righteous (Rom 3:10-13).
This is exactly what Osteen accomplishes at his “Night of Hope” charade. As we have seen in the video above, Osteen does not preach the full counsel of the Word of God. Instead, he preaches a mixture of humanism, secularism and mysticism wrapped in a veneer of Christian wording. There is no Christ crucified, Died, Rose again (the Gospel) being preached at these events. Instead, we hear about attaining God's favor or having a blessed life.
Even when scripture was quoted in this video, it was misused. When John 3:16 was being proclaimed from the stage about the “whosoever’s," it was being done so out of context. Sorry, but John 3:16 is not the Gospel of Christ, the Gospel that saves. John 3:16 is a declarative action of the believing ones. It is a promise for God’s elect. If Osteen wanted to give the Gospel, that is a big if, then he should have used 1 Corinthians 15:1-4.
“Now I would remind you, brothers, [a] of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,”
As much as Osteen would like people to take a “fresh new step and a new beginning” this is not the Gospel. Having people standing up and having others clap for them or writing down in their bible that they are now part of the “Christian family” does not make it so. Only one person will save them and that is not the “Night of Hope” or Osteen, but belief in Christ, His Gospel, and the Christ talked about in the bible.
Besides being no real Gospel given, did you catch the “I declare” Word of Faith mantra being promoted within the video? I did. If this was a highlighted part of the carnival act, one can conclude that this had to be a good portion of the event. In what power does Osteen or any of his cohorts to declare anything? They are not speaking the truth of God’s word. They don’t preach the Gospel. They instead twist scripture; mislead people with false hopes and assurances. So in whose power are they declaring what? It is sure not in the power of the God we find in the Bible.
After watching this video it can be said that there is no real hope in Osteen’s “Night of Hope” events, they are really “Nights of Hopelessness.” As I have often commented on many of Osteen post on his fan pages and have posted in the past and will again post here; “Why Osteen do you twisted the Word of God so much?”
