It seems that 2013 is off to a bang with Emergent / Seeker Driver conferences. Is this shaping up to be a year of the heretics? Just on the heels of the Passions 2013 debacle we are once again facing another emergent confabulation. This time we are looking what is being called the Awaking Revival. This colloquy is scheduled to take place for five nights starting January 29 and running through February 2.
This adventure in paganism is to be hosted by no other than ultra Seeker Driven pastor Stovall Weems. If you are not familiar with Stovall Weems he is the lead pastor, and I use that word begrudgingly, of Celebration Church in Jacksonville Florida. In the world of SD (seeker driven) churches Stovall Weems could be the next four-star general of the SD debauchery. He may even be quickly out passing the likes of even Steven Furtick or Perry Noble.
As far as the lineup of stars for the Awakening Revival, it will be graced with the typical darlings of the SD/EC world (seeker driven – emergent church). Such speakers include; Word of Faith and Oneness speaker Bishop T.D. Jakes, up and coming TBN star Steven Furtick, Seeker Driven Pastor Judah Smith, NAR worship leader Israel Houghton (with Newbreed), and others.
Leave it to the SD/EC leaders to create an event and establish it on an out of context concept or set of bible verses. This is exactly what is going on here with the Awaking Revival. It seems that Stovall Weems and his band of chords are getting ready to schedule the Holy Spirit’s arrival to this event. The marketing of this event is based on the Old Testament practice of Fasting in order to hear from God or to see God move. This concept is flawed for several reasons. First and foremost it puts God into a Synergistic theological stance, verse a Monergistic very of the sovereignty of God. Secondly, events like the Awaking Revival place the Law over the preaching of the Gospel, making what I do the basis of what I get in return. At the upcoming Awakening Revival, this seems to be and mostly will be the case.
While this “revival” puts on a veneer of holiness by tying the New Testament into the scheme, don’t be fooled. The New Testament scripture of Matthew 5:14
“"You are the light of the world--like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.”
is cleverly used out of context to make those who are attending believe that God is making them the “light of the world”. This is the typical ploy of “revivals” like this one. The trick or ploy is simple. Get the people hyped up on emotionalism and believing that because they are attending this “revival” God is going to do something or move in a big way.
The question we need to ask is a simple one at that. Do we need the lies and out of context scripture twisting of these workers of iniquity to see God move? The answer is NO! God is not reliant on us, or what we do to make Him move or for us do anything for His will to be done. The mere fact that God allows us to be a part of His will and allows us to be used in that will is pleasure enough.
Surly just as this is the story of other SD/EC conferences we will have an abundance of Law with extremely little or no Gospel being preached. More often than not, Jesus is kept tied up behind the stage and let out with tied hands to be paraded around the stage long enough to make it known he is in the building. The agenda of self promotion along with narcissi-Jesus (making the bible about one’s self) will be in full play. With the king of narcissi-Jesus, Steven Furtick present, this event will prove to be extremely self fulfilling.
Get ready I am sure we will all be in for a bumpy ride in the weeks ahead. So fasten your seat belts, put your crash helmets and get ready to dive head first in to 2013 which is quickly becoming a year of SD/EC heresy.
