Let me start this out first by saying what happened today in Newtown Connecticut at the Sandy Hook elementary school with the murder of 20 students, 6 adults and the killer should outrage every single Christian. Here at Empowered by Christ ministries we offer our prayers and condolences to all those affected by this tragedy. Every Christian reading this, please remember to keep all those who are touched by this tragedy in your prayers. We must also remember that God is not shaken by what happened today in Connecticut. God's sovereignty is not affected by this tragic set of events that unfolded today. He is not sitting on His throne shaking His head wondering what happened. While we may never fully understand why this evil event took place took or better how it plays into God’s will, God does, and that is what matters. No matter what God will still be glorified in this, we just may not understand how right now.
What we can understand is what happened today in Newtown Connecticut is first, this is a byproduct of the fallen nature of man. Man is showing his depraved sinful nature that has touched each of us. Secondly, what happened today is just another example of the “culture of death” that has now become the “new normal” in America.
This “culture of death” may be seen almost anywhere one turns in society today. It is in our movies, television shows, medical system, both news media and social media, and even how we value life at its conception. While again what happened today in Newtown Connecticut is tragic and deserves our deepest sympathies. What happened today is just the result of a society that has taken God out of the public arena and has turned its back almost altogether on God.
What can we expect from a nation and its people that have allowed over 54 million babies to be legally exterminated in the name of democracy?
(I am not making this an argument over abortion, this is not the time or place for that. I am pointing this fact of legalized abortion out to make the following point.)
Do we not think this disregard for life at its conception would not translate into a disregard for life at all levels? When you cross the line of allowing people to have the right to murder their children in the womb, a culture is only one post modern slip away from the next step. We as a nation have allowed this “culture of death” to come forth and germinate into what it is today. We are only now seeing the beginning results of this germination of a culture that has no regard of life inside the womb or outside of it. When a society is raised to think that allowing one version of murder is justifiable than it is not hard to justify other allowable means.
Please pray for those families affected by the Newtown shooting and pray for our nation that we wake up from this culture of death that has become the “new normal” for a nation that once honored life. Please remember that Jesus Christ is the only cure for this “culture of death.” It is His death on the cross, His atoning work, His justifying us and His righteousness that can save. Apart from that we can do nothing that will change this culture. These deaths today should be a charge to every Christian to go forth and preach the Gospel of Christ into a nation that is more and more all about death.
